Photographing the Illuminare Retreat in Scotland was an unforgettable experience and a beautiful reminder of why retreat photography is so powerful. As a luxury retreat photographer, being invited back for a second Illuminare retreat was an honor, and this week in the Scottish Highlands was nothing short of magical.

Our home base for the week was the stunning Firthside House in Nairn, Scotland, a historic estate that perfectly embodied the quiet elegance and grounding energy Illuminare is known for. From the moment the women arrived, the tone was set — they were welcomed by a bagpipe player in a traditional kilt, an iconic and emotional introduction to Scotland that instantly made everyone feel immersed in the experience.

Throughout the week, we explored some of the most breathtaking landscapes and culturally rich locations Scotland has to offer. From wandering through historic sites like Elgin Cathedral, standing on the powerful grounds of Culloden Battlefield, and touching the ancient stones at Clava Cairns, to savoring refined meals at destinations like Boath House, Orrin Restaurant, and Cawdor Tavern, every moment felt intentional and deeply connected. One of the most special highlights was a private visit to Cawdor Castle, complete with a personal meeting with Lady Cawdor, offering a rare and meaningful glimpse into Scotland’s living history.

We also ventured to the dramatic landscapes of the Isle of Skye, where misty mountains, rugged coastlines, and ever-changing light created a cinematic backdrop for connection and reflection. Between exploring the Highlands, stopping to meet Highland cows, and strolling the charming streets of Inverness, the women shared laughter, vulnerability, and conversations that turned strangers into lifelong friends.

Illuminare means “to light up” in Italian, and that philosophy is felt in every detail of the retreat. The intention is that each woman leaves feeling inspired, reconnected, and truly lit up — and witnessing that transformation through my lens is what makes retreat photography so meaningful. Capturing not just beautiful imagery, but genuine connection, emotion, and story, is what elevates luxury retreat photography beyond documentation.
